The life expectancy of 75 is an average (of the US population i assume), billionaires are likely to live longer

I do have a backup laptop, which does come in handy for the rare case of, for example, making a new install.
But yeah, i feel like a laptop is an awkward middle ground between a phone and a desktop. It’s not as powerful and has a small screen, but it’s also not as portable as my phone.
Granted if i travelled more i would need a laptop, and then i would have a dock of some kind at home to extend its capabilities (USB hub, second monitor, etc)
See the thing is i’m not worldly enough to know what common animals in my country are uncommon in other countries. I mean there’s some mallards here and there, the ones with the green head just like the meme, are those exotic and surprising? Oh, my old hometown has swans. They’re surprisingly aggressive.
What i will say though is that i definitely feel that way about architecture. I quite like the winding medieval back alley leading to a church built in 980 (as in the year), it’s cool; but Americans will have a spiritual experience over it because no building in the US is that old.
So let me get this straight: they cut down the forest, plant palm trees, harvest it for i guess a few years, and then… plant the forest back? How does that make sense just on any level?
I mean at least i happen to know it doesn’t make sense on an ecological level as a new groth forest is massively different from an old growth forest, so the new forest is no replacement for the old one.
Also i’m not sure if you understand what an argument from ignorance is? It’s not an ignorant argument, it’s a specific type of logical fallacy. The observation that no extractive industry has proven sustainable is a predictor that they’re unlikely to prove sustainable in the future.
I’m gonna have to nuance that: while palm oil is an environmental disaster, it is in fact the most efficient vegetable oil in terms of land area per ton of finished product. This is because the the plant that produces it is incredibly productive, more than sunflowers or rapeseed.
So changing to other vegetable oils would result in more land area being cultivated overall.
Any statement that boils down to “this extractive industry is environmentally sustainable” is massively suspicious. I don’t trust that statement at all. I don’t buy that you can produce palm oil on that scale while respecting nature.
I’m currently using a 2008 hard drive and i really hope it has some life left in it because i haven’t backed up the contents yet
A lot has been said about Call of Duty MWII, but if your theory is correct then we’ll have to say that, of all things, its plot was prescient. And i’m not ready for that
Well no, because the old sub will continue to exist and will therefore always be where everyone goes until Reddit itself dies. I really doubt admins would let me delete the sub.
I feel like AI companies have been scraping Reddit for their datasets already since the beginning and without permission. In fact, unless there’s been a regulation change that i’m not aware of, i’m not sure why they would have Reddit “sign away” the data when they can just scrape it.
Also dubious if the current form of AI has a future. They seem like they should revolutionize every sector when you look at their capacities, but in practice their applications might be more limited than we thought?
Anyway, if Reddit does go public i will be deleting my account within the hour. The only reason i haven’t yet is that i’ve been a moderator of the same subreddit for eight years and it’s the only thing that’s been consistent in my life in that time, i’m kind of attached. The reason i will is i didn’t sign up to create value for shareholders, i signed up to create value for a community.
I only install what i need so i haven’t actually installed a lot of apps. The copout answer is Firefox, but if i’m taking the prompt seriously it would be Simple Keyboard or Floris Board, they’re highly customizeable keyboards that i really enjoy and i have a hard time deciding which to leave installed.
Just in general though, browsing F-Droid feels so good. I’m in a much simpler mindset where i’ll think “oh that’s neat i want to try it”, which is how i used to feel about tech. Browsing PlayStore makes me think “that’s neat, but what’s the catch? How are they going to scam me/harvest my data? I’m not installing this”
they were hopeful…
The CD player i found on the curb. I had no idea how old it was but i looked it up for this thread and it has user reviews from 2007.
Sony CMT Nez50
Works great, 15 volume already feels loud
This is the magnet i’ve got:

I actually don’t have a torrent client installed right now so i haven’t checked if this is correct, you tell me lol
GTA6 doesn’t release until 2025 so there’s even time for them to make the game great while it’s still the latest in the series.
At the same time, the hacking problem in vanilla GTA:Online is going to get even worse now than it already was.
Overall, it’d say this is good for the likes of FiveM and bad for the vanilla game?
A Johnny Halliday impersonator.
Johnny Halliday was the french version of Elvis Presley, except he lived long enough to release too many albums and become unbearable.
What’s impressive is that he became one of the best selling artists of all times while selling records almost exclusively in France. I don’t think he ever left the mainstream since the 60’s.
Yeah, but the further back you go the less useful it becomes. If you look before Israel you find the British Empire, the Ottoman Empire and the Roman Empire; two of these don’t exist anymore and the last doesn’t really exist anymore.
The choice of which time range to include isn’t that arbitrary, there are pretty significant markers that make the previous state of things a lot less relevant. When studying french politics, it’s not useful to go back further than the 1789 revolution because that event changed so much that the previous reality doesn’t matter anymore; similarly, the foundation of Israel changed the power dynamics in the area significantly enough that you can start there. Remembering the previous events is useful for context but won’t change the conclusion.
Since 2010 i’ve made three Facebook accounts, deleted one and never use the other two. Active users would be a more useful metric.
It’s been commented on before that, for its size, Twitter has a disproportionate influence not just on the internet but even on politics. This is still the case today because no good alternatives have emerged for the mainstream yet.
This is comical because Israel is the attacker, and has been for its entire existence. Their goal is to conquer and ethnically cleanse more territory in order to create an enthnostate.
Hamas only exists as a reaction to israeli colonialism. That’s litterally the only reason for their existence.
So, to be precise:
Maybe not in the narrow sense, but the colonial efforts of Israel are responsible for the broader conflict lasting since the 50’s, which the current conflict is a chapter of.
It’s not necessary for Israel to conquer Gaza. It would be enough to just not expand their territory and respect human rights and international law, which they never did at any point in 70 years, leading to the current situation where there are no good options anymore.
The terror attack is a consequence of lack of restraint. (i wouldn’t normally word it like that, i’m just using the same words for rhetoric effect)
Eduard von Grutzner painted a lot of monks enjoying beer and spirits.
