  • Nicotine by far. I quit doing most other drugs (except I still enjoy smoking weed), but I just cannot quit smoking. I’ve tried several times, and even if I go a month or two, I still can’t resist.

I think the reason for this is because I actually enjoy smoking quite a lot. All those other drugs eventually became more of a living hell than they were fun, so quitting them was easier.

In 1962, in his book “Profiles of the Future: An Inquiry into the Limits of the Possible”, science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated his famous Three Laws, of which the third law is the best-known and most widely cited: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”.

“Magic” is just a term ignorant people use to describe something they don’t understand and are too lazy and to figure out. Sometimes, just because they refuse to accept the facts.

Example: man-made climate change causes record wildfires in LA, and some claim “God did it!”

Another: cancer patient goes into remission after successful medical treatments. Some believe “God did it!”

  • It isn’t just one person. That’s kind of how this works. When one extraordinarily slimy shitty person starts grabbing power, it encourages a lot of other people to become worse than they are by giving into their base impulses and desires, fearing no consequence. Being a piece of shit is an infectious disease in a very real sense.

It reminds me of religious people who asked me, an atheist, if you don’t believe in hell, then what stops you from committing crimes and murdering people? Well, I say to them, I’m just a decent person who understands the difference between right and wrong, and how my actions, especially selfish actions, can negatively affect people around me. I also possess the empathy required to feel bad when people around me are hurt by my actions.

These people don’t ask those questions, and they were morally dubious in the first place.
