That tech looks super cool & might be worth waiting for, but from what I’ve been reading it is still being perfected and will likely see big improvements fairly quickly after release.

Heres a clip from this article I think is relevent: Teh said the new drives have double the capacity of storage systems using conventional 16TB perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) drives, and this can be doubled again over the next four years. The company is projecting 4TB platters in the next couple of years, with 5TB coming shortly thereafter, and 6TB out beyond the current roadmap.

So there’s a chance you wait for those drives, pay a little extra cuz the tech is new, then have something twice as good get released a year or two later.

It’s definetly a tricky situation & ultimately up to you and what you want. Do you need that extra storage asap, or is it more of a eventually kind thing? Does new tech have its own intrinsic value to you, or is it more about price per terabyte?

There are a number of storage technologies in the works right now. However, I think they will result in a new type of memory device rather than HDDs getting cheaper. Kind of like how a stack of CDs isn’t cheaper now than it was in 2005, rather there are new types of storage that offer more memory and longer life spans.

So if you are definetly going HDD, prices are probably not going to get that much cheaper, if any cheaper at all.

I’d say keep an eye out for sales & that will probably make a bigger difference than waiting a set amount of time.

Chiming in to say that on my asus laptop, the start up button is f12! Press as soon as the first logo appears on the screen. It might take a few times to get the timing right, if you miss it just restart the computer.

It should take you to a menu that looks like a classic hacker screen (blue screen with pixilated text, no clickable UI). Then go to the boot options and select the USB.

The potential for self hosted AI is there! I’ve seen a few projects in the works, and if youre tech saavy you can spin up your own. It is pretty resource intensive, but could be run on a home server.

I’m pretty excited to have my own personal AI, vut i want one that is trained on data I select and who only phones home to my server lol.

Super interesting to read your more technical perspective. I also think facial recognition (and honestly most AI use cases) are best when used to supplement an existing system. Such as flagging a potential shoplifter to human security.

Sadly most people don’t really understand the tech they use for work. If the computer tells them something they just kind of blindly believe it. Especially in a work environment where they have been trained to do what the machine says.

My guess is that the people were trained on how to use the system at a very basic level. Troubleshooting and understanding the potential for error typically isn’t covered in 30min corporate instructional meetings. They just get a little notice saying a shoplifter is in the store and act on that without thinking.

Honestly I’d be down for one of the debates to be replaced by a big wresting match. VP candidates can tag in. Everyone gets silly outfits. Their one liners all have to do with policy. It would probably get a much bigger turnout than traditional debates lmao

I see where youre comming from & also think its important to support artists I like, and I do. I think both AI and artists can coexist & serve different purposes.

Something like this, using AI for a banner, is using a tool for people to create something they couldnt/wouldnt before. It doesnt mean I’m not going to buy a cool print or painting from an artist I like.

& I think its cool to have something that aggregates information and makes it accesible and easy to work with for the masses. Its messed up that it is currently controlled by corporate interests, but there are also people working on FOSS ai. Its this kind of snapshot of humanity in its current state, that I think goes beyond any particular artist/writer/person.

I get being worried about it taking jobs, but I think new ones will spring up to take their place.

(Or really optimistically maybe well see some sort of radical change that will make the concept of ‘earning a living’ obsolete, like UBI or something)

Edited to add: as a writer, people who buy my writing wouldnt just use ai to replace me. If anything it can supplement my work by making it easier for fans to make fanart & help build hype around the universe and characters that I created.

Yo db dont let these haters get you down. I think it looks like a really cool project and love the idea of a shifting banner than anyone can contribute prompts to. I also love the idea of backgroud details being influenced by various metrics of the community.

AI is a tool (just like photoshop, electric lawn mowers, and combustion engines). Anyone who thinks its replacing artists are really underestimating the editing needed to produce something good from AI generators. And this is comming from a writer who loves how much AI has helped with various parts of the process.

Giant group texts. One has over 30 people, mostly used for baby/marriage announcements. Then a bunch of other group texts for different social groups (stoners, siblings, camping, etc).

I think its that many people didnt really leave reddit, some migrated to lemmy, some to discord, some to other small sites, and some just quit that style of website.

Lemmy definitely is still pretty small, but i think its growing pretty well (i remember checking it out years ago and it being a super tiny niche site). It takes time for things to set up & for users to get comfortable and grow communities they care about. Organic growth is slow.

Thats such a good point i hadnt thought about before. Training data helps the ai know what is most common, so its products tend to be tropy, predictable and a bit bland (which is great for some things). They are often lacking that ooomph that makes great works truely unique and fascinating.

Its kind of scary to think of how the profit motive is capable of decaying even our basic infastructure and transportation. Hopefully it serves as some sort ofwake up call and change comes before things deteriorate any further.

Which is so silly, because AI writing still needs a human editor. I write for a living and there tons of work that involves using AI as a tool to increase productivity rather than to replace writers completely… like photoshop didnt put photographers out of business it just changed the work flow.

Density is defintly amazing in DNA, its just so fragile. Even our own bodies have a constant degridation of our DNA… I wonder if they could take that concept and make something sturdier by using slightly different molecules to make up the chains.

Maybe shorter chains with stronger cross bonding & a gentle method of reading the chain could also help?

Its definetly an interesting route & itll be cool to see what happens with it over the next 10-15 years.

Im most excited about the potential for crystal based storage. Right now there is work being done to etch silica glass internally, allowing for incredibly long term preservation and durability. It can even be rewritten, though the tech is definetly best for achival purposes and is being pursued primarily by movie companies wanting high quality storage.

DNA also sounds interesting, though it doesnt seem like a good way of preserving data long term. DNA is very fragile, and seems like an odd route to take for long term archiving.
