You can put a turd in an expensive suit, but in the end it’s still just Jamie Dimon.

I use an iPad. Apple doesn’t seem to care where the file came from, they just make it readable. I was somewhat mad about it, as I have never been an Apple fan, but the actual experience of using the iPad as a reader converted me.
Some BBSs had a communication system called FIDOnet that would dial up back and forth in a hierarchy at night to update their forums. You could personally run something called a point on fidonet that was analogous to running an instance yourself on Lemmy. I ran a point in the early 90s.
You can see the costs for lemmy.world on the blog for the associated mastodon instance mastodon.world.
I started reading about Lemmy about ten minutes after reading this the first time. I can’t support that kind of stupid
I’ve run a number of generations of servers at home. Generally speaking you just need a raid solution of some sort (motherboard solution, external add-on with interface board, what have you), slap an OS on it and adapt your device usage to include it. It depends on what hardware/software you have available to you. That being said, the last two have been synology models. They’re easy to use, and at some level include an external interface to their expansion cab. I can stream straight to my phone and access my server from anywhere and it has tons of other features I’m unclear on how to use, but I’ve seen plex on the install list, and it runs Linux under the hood.
Thanks! It still feels weird, I had my account for a long time and have a fair amount of karma, but the site has been going to shit for a while and enough is enough. This feels like the very early web or fidonet and I’m stoked to be here.
This is actually the reason I’m here on Lemmy now. I love John Oliver but with all the other dark subreddits it was a bit much, and already had been looking into it. Led to Lemmy by too much sexy John Oliver.
Given the Snowden revelations, what an unfortunate choice of names.
