A me pare che la minaccia di una migrazione inesorabile verso Lemmy sia sempre più concreta.

Se i sub più popolari non riaprono in 3-4 giorni è possibile che gli admin forzino la mano bypassando i mod e a quel punto il dado è tratto.

Mi pare poco furbo da parte di Reddit andare contro la community; Meta ad esempio lo capì quando provò a modificare la policy della privacy di WhatsApp e bloccò tutto subito alle prime proteste, optando per modifiche più subdole e graduali in modo da ottenere lo stesso risultato senza farsi notare.

Non capisco perché Reddit non usi lo stesso approccio. Potrebbero fare pagare poco nulla le API e alzare a poco a poco i prezzi, facendo morire le app di terze parti in tempi un po’ più lunghi ma con meno rumore.

With 12k users the server had to be upgraded, imagine if it was 1 million. Somebody has to pay those bills and it’s yet to see how it will work with donations. So I think that this is the main challenge, not impossible at all to tackle (see Lichess or Wikipedia who live out of donations) but it’s definitely interesting to see how it will work.

I think it will take time to smooth few rough edges but already now it’s usable.

However I have big concerns on how this structure can scale, it already suffers with few thousands users. Plus security, privacy and sustainability of the fediverse is still a big question mark to me.

But it’s exciting and I hope it will be the future of socials.
