I think it’s entirely possible that they chose to compare to a 3 year old phone not because they are only targeting those upgrades to people with 3 years old phones, but because it sounds a lot more impressive that way instead of just the smaller incremental improvements over last years model.

It should also be noted that Apple admitted at one point to purposefully slowing down older iPhones too, which very clearly was done to get people to upgrade. If that’s not planned obsolescence I don’t know what is.

You talk about them as if they are some benevolent entity, when that’s just very much not the case.

Same here, just for gaming. Have multiple other computers for actual computer needs. Though admittedly, none of them are running Linux as the primary OS yet.

Overall I agree, unless of course that voice of yours has an opinion that the lemmy hive mind has decided is bad (Israel, cars, capitalism, renting/landlords, non Linux operating systems)

So you hate that PCs are more capable and can display better graphics at higher framerates and have rationalized it to yourself that worse graphics and framerates on a console are “how the developers intended”.

I can understand not wanting to tinker with settings and just load a game up and know what to expect in terms of graphics and framerate, but I just cannot disagree more with what you are saying here. Building games to console limitations and not even giving the option for fidelity or framerate just seems like a step backward.

Either way. I think this is where I drop out of this. We are going in circles and while I agree we should work on the things you mention, we clearly just disagree about the actual guns themselves. And of course neither of us are actually in a direct position to make changes to any of those things, I assume. So you have a good one.

I think everything you were saying would be great to accomplish. It’s just really disingenuous to propose them knowing there is a slim chance any of them will happen while completely ignoring the actual guns, just because you want to keep your guns.

We do have a societal problem. We also very much have a gun problem.

And proposing all these other things you know won’t get accomplished is a way to shift all the responsibility away from the gun issue itself.

I didn’t specify a plan one way or another. I just think it’s crazy that the talking points you presented seem pretty clearly designed to just kick this issue down the road, cause at least that way you still get to have your guns.

And believe me, solving all those things you mentioned would be great. But why not also try and do something about the major gun issues at the same time too?

So basically… Fix every other nearly impossible to fix problem first before even deciding to do anything about the actual guns, if anything at all?

I’m all for it, but I’m not jumping on board to ev until the infrastructure is at a point where charging is as quick and easy and ubiquitous as filling up gas. Or at least closer than it is now. Then again I will admit I don’t have an EV so I haven’t been able to personally experience what that is actually like.

I could however see getting an EV in a two car household where the primary purpose of the EV is for commuting and just getting around locally. Anything beyond that though I would still feel more comfortable with gas or a hybrid.

This absolutely feels like a Hanlon’s razor type situation especially given what we have learned about Elon musk over the last 5 or so years. The whole evil genius shtick just doesn’t fly anymore. He’s an idiot who just happens to have made enough good or lucky business decisions in the past to get him where he is now.

I get that too, but I dont think social media is really a great place to get a representative idea of how people are truly feeling about things.

A lot of social media tends to evolve into echo chambers, so not great for wider views. As mentioned too, it’s not great for nuance. While I think most people are probably capable of getting the nuance of a situation, when “discussing” things online, having to type your thoughts out into a few small paragraphs, that all just seems to get completely lost, and only the bullet points, which are often the most extreme parts, remain.

Lemmy is also seemingly filled with tankies and people that seem like they want to be edgy just to be edgy or specifically to push certain viewpoints/ideologies. And considering that it’s not a widely adopted platform, I think it’s especially not representative of people as a whole.

And of course with the anonymity of the internet, people know they can say stuff just to get other people frustrated or angry with no consequences to their own personal lives.

I find it’s usually best to just avoid any social media around major and divisive news events like this. Specifically where people are allowed to comment and express their opinions. Everyone just gets more extreme in their views, are convinced they are absolutely right, and there is never any room for nuance.

I’m glad it worked out for you. And I also know that my idea of it all can’t possibly apply to every single company that was or is a part of that whole culture.

I just find myself sceptical of it all since I much prefer to have my own time, and my own space as separate from work and the people I work with. And perks like that just very clearly seem designed to get me to spend as much time at work as possible.

I never understood that whole tech/startup culture. I would absolutely hate for my entire life to be my job. And from the outside all these “cool” perks are very clearly designed to get you to spend as much time working as possible. No thanks.

I would say though that it’s not really a great choice unless you are already pretty tech savvy. And these days, less and less people seem to even know how to actually use a computer, let alone one that runs Linux.
