  • For Android:

    • Open Settings
    • Search for “Lockdown”
    • Select “Show Lockdown option” from the results, or the result that most resembles that.
    • Enter your pin if required.
    • Tap the associated slider to enable Show lockdown option

Now when you hold your power button, you get a “lockdown” option that disables biometrics and forces you to enter your passcode for the next unlock.

Particularly useful for me, as I have my phone set up to always be unlocked if my watch is close enough (maybe stupid of me), but I can force lock it at any time.

  • AI have no concepts, period. It doesn’t know what a person is, or what the laws are. It generates word salad that approximates human statements.

This isn’t quite accurate. LLMs semantically group words and have a sort of internal model of concepts and how different words relate to them. It’s still not that of a human and certainly does not “understand” what it’s saying.

I get that everyone’s on the “shit on AI train”, and it’s rightfully deserved in many ways, but you’re grossly oversimplifying. That said, way too many people do give LLMs too much credit and think it’s effectively magic. Reality, as is usually the case, is somewhere in the middle.

  • Just because it isn’t dangerous to the average individual does not mean it isn’t a problem and something that should not be happening.

The entire point of this thread is that from an outsiders perspective, you’re only going to see the news articles and form biased opinions. You’re going to see “Oh wow, the US has a lot of school shootings, schools must be super dangerous!”, meanwhile there were 82 deaths from school shootings last year out of 49.4 million students, or 0.000165% of the student population. Even looking at injuries, we only get to 0.00054%.

Is that number too high? Fuck yes. Any number of children injured or dying due to violence is unacceptable. It’s disgusting and the lack of response from our leadership is abhorrent. But are schools in the US dangerous because of this? Absolutely not.
