I’m gonna ask my Abuelo for a USB so I can run Etcher and Yunohost for my instance. I want to choose the name craigsworld.net (like how lemmy.world’s creator chose lemmy.world). How does the site naming through Yunohost work? How much does it cost?

Protip: Don’t announce to the world what domain(s) you intend to buy, because then someone might get to it first.

Ha, I’ve heard that even domain hosts themselves will jack up the price of a domain later after you search up its availability if you don’t pay for it then and there! All powered by an algorithm, too…

Additionally to this do not use GoDaddy, they snag good domains in front of your nose.

Yup, can confirm. Go into it knowing what you would like it to be, and have a list of tlds you are okay with, plan to purchase once and only once. I like namecheap personally.

Certain TLD (e.g. .com, .net, .xyz) will cost a different amount per year to register. I use porkbun as well. A .com or .net may be $12.50+ per year. The cheapest domain is 9 numbers and .xyz from porkbun at 1.22/yr (e.g 123456789.xyz) but isnt as memorable. I use one of those just for external access otg with a cron script for updating the dns entries.

Also remember to hide the whois info because you will immediately start getting calls from scammers that scrape the phone number and call you telling you that you need to pay them to finish setting things up

Generic process is to register the domain, set up the DNS entries to point to your server IP, and if theres any dynamic DNS setup in your software, to enter the api key from your registrar and the domain so it can update it if your IP ever changes.

Domains are cheap, shop around and get the cheapest 1st level you find, and buy a second level under that one.

For example, mylemmy.eu since .eu are by far the cheapest I can buy over here. It can go from 1 buck to 20 Buck per year, even more for special 1st levels (like .love)

Cloudflare are the cheapest domain registrar since they take zero profit from the sale. You will not find anywhere cheaper. (If you do, then look very carefully for hidden charges since that registrar will be subsidising your domains)

They’ve got some pretty useful free tools to help you manage it, and use it effectively too.

(For the Cynical, CF’s MD was very open about why they don’t charge for domains - it’s to get your goodwill. The only restriction is you can’t use third party nameservers for domains you host with them for free, you have to use CF’s. I’ve never found that a problem in many years of both private and commercial domain hosting there)

You can use a duckdns subdomain as a testing ground if you want to make sure if all things work well before buying a domain. Normally you can also host sites under your ipv4 address too; but it might break stuff on lemmy, never tried it.

I mean yeah you need a domain to host stuff on, as for cost it depends on what the URL is
