Not exactly a long time lemmy user, but a long time lurker of reddit clones since before lemmy existed, and I’ve definitely spent time on lemmy before it was cool – it is absolutely amazing to see this platform take off. Lemmy was the first reddit clone where I thought to myself “they figured it out!!”

No other project was seriously talking about federation, for reasons which escape me to this day. What are the alternatives? We all go back to running disconnected, individual forums? We all go to some other enormous site which is guaranteed to have the same fate as reddit? How was this complicated conceptually? Lemmy got the right answer and is implementing it well enough that it’s actually got the potential to gain traction.

You would not want to try to replace reddit with the tools that came before lemmy.

It was a shiny clean looking old reddit with great intentions and probably closer to my vision of speech but hot damn it was either people or campaigns because it got super racist real quick. Some have mentioned though that a lot didn’t seem genuine.
