Yeah this is a big problem I see often. You have underground utilities? Tree planting becomes a huge thing. And in a lot of these walkable areas, places you’d want trees, folks tend to also prefer not to have the wires overhead with telephone poles everywhere, and so they’ve been backed into a corner.

I did just sit through a presentation by my local environmental commission where they addressed the issue. The solution seems to be trees bred for the specific environment: deciduous provides shade but doesn’t drop a lot of leaves; can grow tall but the root ball grows in a certain way so as not to interrupt sidewalks and utilities; hearty and resilient. I can’t recall the trees, but they were described as essentially not naturally occuring.

Got a new roof for this reason. Had a leak around chimney flashing. Got it fixed. Leaked again a few years later, got a new roof. I removed my old white grease-laden range hood and replaced with a stainless steel one. My range is in the middle of my home, so unfortunately I haven’t been able to vent it outdoors, but the hood is convertible for when I decide to adventure a little more.

Old range hood was hard wired through a hole in the wall, no box obviously. Put a box in the cabinets above for the new hood. My cabinets are not designed to accept a range hood apparently either, so it made it all the more interesting.

My parents bought a beach house (a bungalow on a postage stamp, before anyone gets an ideas that we’re some 1%ers) and it came with an old washer dryer. My old man put a single pair of jeans in the dryer and seemingly forgot about them. He says he did it for a timer. Leaves the house. Nobody there for a week. My mom comes in, dryer still running, jeans essentially translucent at this point. One of the things you can laugh at only because it wasn’t a tragedy.
